FC Legend Scores Knockout for Charity at Award Winning Ryehill Pub

Crooked Billet in Ryehill announces annual charities and hosts sponsored fundraiser with a twist, in aid of the Humber Lifeboat

Ryehill, United Kingdom – May 27th, 2008 – The Crooked Billet in Ryehill (Nr Hedon) today released their nominated charity for 2008-9, The Humber Lifeboat, and announced their first fundraising event to take place on Saturday 21st June 2008. The event is a one day ‘Wackathon’ starting at 3.p.m including a balloon release, steam engines, live entertainment, darts knockout (taking place on the Friday) and a wacky races special!.

The event is sponsored by legendary ex-Hull FC coach Arthur Bunting, and his good friend Richard Marriot who is the only honorary member of the Spurn Point Humber Lifeboat. The pair - both are Crooked Billet Ryehill regulars, have donated £400 as an initial booster towards the fundraising event and all proceeds go to the charity.

The Crooked Billet adopts a couple of local charities each year and in 2008 it’s the turn of the Humber Lifeboat.   Landlord Peter Ling told us: “We run various fundraising events throughout the year and have done since we arrived in Ryehill in 2006. There are so many worthy causes locally and it’s really difficult to select our nominated charities, however we are very pleased to be helping the Humber Lifeboat and kick it all off with this event – they rely upon the generosity of donors and we were amazed by the job they do at Spurn Point. We really hope the local community will support them by getting involved.”

The Crooked Billet team is known for coming up with innovative ideas in all aspects of their business – their pub theme nights are legendary and this charity event will be no exception.  They have decided to turn horse racing on it’s head and go for a ‘Wacky Races’ theme, where punters can bet on 20 of the world’s most bizarre races including: Cheese Rolling, Sheep Racing, Japanese Rope Swinging and Tug-Of War (Orang-utan v Sumo Wrestler!) plus many more.

Arthur Bunting told us: “I am proud to be involved in the sponsorship of this event”.  Richard conceded, “I am very passionate about this charity and we are delighted to be the key sponsor. It can be tough times out there on the sea and hopefully the fundraising will raise the profile and let the hard working folk at the lifeboat know that their bravery and protection doesn’t go unnoticed. “

Arthur was the legendary Hull FC coach between 1978 and 1985, whose appointment marked the start of a famous period of dominance for the team.  Hull FC won all of their 26 division two matches in 1978-79 the only time a club has won all of its league matches in a season and returning to the top flight”

The Humber Lifeboat is based at Spurn Point and has a crew of seven full time men who are on call 24 hours a day.  These employees form part of the only full-time crew in England. The crew has dedicated their lives to saving the lives of others, and lead a disrupted family lifestyle because of their duties - this can make life hard. The boats exposed position, with winds from the Southwest to Northwest, means that boarding is a very dangerous task, and that is without coping with the often treacherous seas that are experienced in the region. The Humber Lifeboat has saved thousands of lives since it’s inception in 1810, and today continues to be a critical lifesaving service helping people and vessels in distress.  The crew are also first-aiders and are often called upon to evacuate sick passengers or attend to injury at sea and on land at Spurn Point.  Dave Steenvoorden, Superintendent Coxswain from the Humber Lifeboat told us: “ We are delighted that the Crooked Billet has chosen us as one of their nominated charities for 2008. The Humber Lifeboat is greatly in need of donations as we receive no funding from the UK Government and rely upon the generosity of donors. We really appreciate the awareness created by an event like this”.

The Wackathon takes place on Saturday 21st June, and begins at 3.pm.  All are welcome and there will be plenty of entertainment for children.
