Ryehill Pub Saves Food Miles & Promotes Sizzling
Local Produce During British Sausage Week

The Crooked Billet in Ryehill announce a week of locally produced sausages
and a real ale beer festival as part of their vibrant October programme

Ryehill, United Kingdom – October 8, 2007 – After massive success in August and September, The Crooked Billet in Ryehill (Nr Hedon) today announced their October programme, which includes a British Sausage Week event between Monday October 15th and Saturday October 20th that uses 100% local produce from the Hull and East Yorkshire area.

Owners Peter and Jackie Ling already use as much local produce as possible from the area, and are proud to showcase this even further during the sausage week. In addition to this, their pub company, Marston’s, has recently been accepted into the FTSE4Good index, a list of FTSE companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards. Marston’s believe that their admission is a reflection of their commitment in increasing energy efficiency across its pub estate and head office.

During British Sausage week they will be offering a very special menu that uses high quality local meat from Mike Wilson Butchers in Patrington. Mike Wilson was commissioned by the Crooked Billet to produce the bespoke sausage varieties and they are exclusively developed and produced for the Crooked Billet. There will be 10 types to choose from including a local game sausage, a Welsh Dragon (pork and leek seasoning), and flavoured combinations such as chilli beef, beef tandoori, sweet and sour pork, and turkey, orange and basil. The star of the show however, will be the Billet Big One, a 1llb Cumberland sausage ring. The sausages are served ‘Billet Style’ where you go through the five easy steps to a great Billet Banger – you choose your local sausage, choose one of four different gourmet mashes or regular mash / chips, select your gravy, choose your award winning real ale, wine, or soft drink, and then sit down and enjoy! All for a set price..”

British Sausage week was developed by the British Sausage appreciation society, and is now in it’s 10th year anniversary. Phil Tufnell, ‘King of the Jungle’ will be bowling all over the country in a bid to find Britain’s best banger. Almost 180,000 tonnes of sausages were sold in the UK last year, cementing their popularity with the British public. Indeed, the Crooked Billet’s 2006 sausage week celebration (their third annual) was so popular they sold out of most varieties and customers were actually requesting to take fresh ones home to cook themselves.

Jackie and Peter Ling have an unmistakable talent for developing original monthly food and entertainment schedules where no two days are the same, and the October programme is no exception. In addition to British sausage week the pub is also running it’s very own beer festival – a rival to Oktoberfest in Germany perhaps!.

Peter told us: “This is the third Crooked Billet Beerfest – customers just keep coming back for more and after the first year we had such a demand that we just simply had to make it an annual event. We’ve increased the number of ales on offer to 10, and it really is a great way for people to experience the versatility of some of the best ones on the market.” The pub also scooped the Cask Marque accreditation earlier this year for serving the perfect pint of cask conditioned ale, ensuring that the customer experience is on an even higher level. Cask Marque is only awarded to licensees who pass a series of rigorous independent beer quality audits.

Other highlights of the programme are the legendary culinary evenings with themes such as seafood (8th Oct - to celebrate national seafood week), a continental night on October 1st, and a sizzler night on October 22nd, as well as a traditional pub piano night (20th Oct) and the second in a new monthly Billet Jazz night featuring The Rob Law trio with local Hull musician Rob on keyboards, Perrier Award Winning guitarist and trumpeter Thom Whitworth and special guest vocalist Lyn Acton. Rob is an upcoming young, talented and very versatile jazz musician who recently performed at the Hull Jazz festival. He has a special talent for organising exceptional ever-changing line-ups that are a popular feature of the local Hull Jazz scene. The pub is also running a charity family fun day in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research on October 28th that has a Halloween theme and there will be a BBQ and live entertainment by ‘Bones’

The specialist theme nights take place every Monday, and the live entertainment programme runs most Saturday’s from 9.p.m. For a full line up please call the pub and they will put you on their mailing list. Booking is strongly advised – tel 01964 622303.
